"So they answered Jesus, 'We don't know'" (Matthew 21:27)

This was said by men who were 'experts in the law'; that is to say: they were experts in knowledge of the Scriptures and religious matters in general. What made them profess ignorance even though they loved being seen as 'having the answers?' It was because Jesus asked them a question which--no matter which answer they gave--exposed their lack of interest in God's truth. So, they proved themselves more interested in politics than religion; more interested in power and prestige than genuine service. What is the deep reason for my interest in religion?
