For Christians, Jesus is the benchmark for righteousness. We measure virtue by its degree of conformity to him. Other moral codes are dim reflections of his personal attributes. Here is why it is not possible to discern the righteousness of persons on the basis of their institutional affiliation or lack thereof. There are many whose humanity has clearly been subject to the refining influence of Jesus--who have never been to church!
