"I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek your servant for I have not forgotten your commandments
In our 21st century space-age cities we are a long way from a socio-economic existence dominated by herdsmen. Even so, the imagery of this verse is not beyond us. Sheep are not the most intelligent of animals and are easily separated from the herd and the shepherd upon whom their safety depends. Once lost, they do not know how to find themselves. They must be searched for, and reclaimed. Though the metaphor is ancient, its truth is timeless. The individual who knows that he is not smart enough or strong enough to make his connection with God sure, will find rest in the thought that God is a shepherd. He will lead his flock and recover them when they stray.
