The people of Judah thought they had God tied to them because they had his temple with them in Jerusalem. Somehow they had come to a view by which they assumed that the superstructure of their worship system--its hardware and software--meant that God couldn't get out of being their sponsor; they had God on a leash. They were mistaken. We never own God. He is never accountable to us, we are to him, and he is free to repudiate anyone who will not own his values.
