In the culture of the Old Testament, a man's success as a man, his reputation in society as well as his significance beyond his own death--was all lodged in his son. His willingness to be his son's advocate and backer, to be generous in providing for his temporal and future flourishing, was his consuming desire. How well this illustrates God's eagerness to plan for and sponsor all of us.
