Can a man be optimistic when his world is turned to ashes? Can a woman be optimistic when her heart is broken? Every day, there are millions whose lives are brutalized and crushed; millions more are stricken by starvation and poverty. Hope springs eternal in the human breast, but is it ill-founded? Only if God does not exist, and only if he is like Jesus Christ. If unfailing compassion is not the abiding, undergirding reality of the universe, all is lost.
